Postal Exam 960 (Custodian): what the posting says, what's unknown, and how to prepare

Exam 960 is the custodial exam named on 2026 postings for Laborer Custodial and Custodian jobs. Much of it is not publicly specified: the official exams page still lists the older custodial Exam 916, and there is no published information package for 960. What we know comes from the postings themselves and from job standards published by the union in August and September 2026.

Two rules matter before the exam: outside hiring for these jobs is restricted to veterans' preference eligibles while they're available (federal law and postal policy), and postings refer "a set number of the highest-ranked eligible candidates", so your result is ranked, not just pass/fail.

PostalPath is an independent company and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the United States Postal Service. Applying for USPS jobs is free at usps.com. Applying and taking the assessment are free; the posting or your invitation names the exact assessment, and PostalPath’s guidance is a starting point, not an official determination.

Who takes Exam 960

  • Laborer Custodial
  • Custodian
  • Group Leader Custodial

How the assessment starts

  1. Custodial jobs are posted on the older eCareer career search; check the posting's eligibility paragraph (veterans' preference restriction) before you apply.
  2. Your invitation email tells you whether you test online or at a test center, and your deadline. Start as soon as it arrives: a missed deadline is an ineligible result for that posting.
  3. If the exam is at a test center, you can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours ahead; a no-show is an incomplete result and no retest for that vacancy.

Safety and PPESafe practices and personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, masks, safety shoes, hearing protection)Not published
CleaningCleaning methods, chemicals and equipmentNot published

Three of these section names resemble the older Exam 916 (safety, cleaning, following instructions); 960 adds Hand Tools and Behavioral Characteristics and doesn't list 916's vocabulary and reading part. Beyond the names, how similar the two exams are isn't known. PostalPath's Exam 960 practice covers the five named sections with original questions; its lengths and timings are our own design, not the official format.

How your score is used

  1. Scoring isn't published. Assume every section counts and aim to do well on all five, because applicants are ranked.
  2. Veterans' preference points, where they apply, are added to a passing score.
  3. A current result is reused automatically for other postings that require the same exam.

Tips that actually matter

  • Confirm your eligibility first: most outside hiring for custodial jobs is restricted to veterans' preference eligibles, and postings say how they handle it.
  • Learn the names and uses of common hand tools, and the PPE that goes with each cleaning task.
  • Practice reading a short set of instructions and carrying them out exactly, in order.
  • Answer the behavioral questions honestly; the format isn't published, and honest answers stay consistent on their own.
  • Keep your invitation: it's the only document that states your test format, location and deadline.
