Describe Your Work Style and What Motivates You: the paired-statement sections

Two sections of the Virtual Entry Assessment use paired statements. In Describe Your Work Style (formerly "Describe Your Approach") you choose which of two statements is more like you; some pairs both sound good, some both sound slightly negative. In What Motivates You, you choose which of two statements better reflects your job preferences. Neither has a right answer we can give you.

PostalPath is an independent company and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the United States Postal Service. Applying for USPS jobs is free at usps.com. Applying and taking the assessment are free.

How to answer

  • Pick the statement that's more true of you and move on. Don't agonize over pairs where both apply.
  • Keep a steady pace; this is usually the longest section by item count.
  • Similar statements come back in different words. Honest answers stay consistent on their own; trying to steer them tends to produce the inconsistency people worry about.
  • The postal service doesn't publish how it scores these sections. Nobody selling a "right side" to pick on never/always or stress questions knows either.

What the section is for

Work-style questions estimate how you'll actually behave on the job: reliability, pace, how you handle rules and pressure. The best preparation is understanding the job (watch the official job video and the Realistic Job Preview) and deciding honestly whether it fits you. In fiscal year 2023 the Inspector General found a third of new pre-career hires left within 90 days; a true answer protects you as much as the employer.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between Describe Your Work Style and What Motivates You?
Work Style asks which of two statements is more like you (how you work). What Motivates You asks which of two statements better reflects what you want from a job (your preferences). Both are paired statements with no published key.
Should I pick the 'always' or 'never' answers?
No strategy is published or reliable. Pick what's true of you.
How many questions are there?
Not published. PostalPath's practice tests use 55 to 79 work-style items depending on the exam, which reflects the proportions applicants describe, but the official count isn't public.
